About Us

Beverly Jovais

Winner of the 2007 Woodside Trainer Equitation Bonus and second in the 2008 Woodside Trainer Incentive Program, Beverly runs her training program, Chestnut Hill, at Beaumont Farms in Petaluma. Beverly is one of the top hunter, equitation and pony trainers in Northern California.  Her riders are consistently among the top ribbons, and frequent winners of year end awards.  In 2008, Chestnut Hill riders won the Hudson & Company Medal Final, as well as the NorCal Senior Medal. Beverly's proven approach stresses excellence built on classic basics, safety and fun.

Certified by the American Riding Instructor Certification Program, Beverly has been a professional trainer for nearly 30 years, and recently began judging.

Raised in Pennsylvania, Beverly started riding at the age of eight. Two years later, she began competing in the pony divisions and later moved on to the junior and adult hunter and equitation rings.  An avid competitor and student of the sport, Beverly's trainers included well known names such as Cynthia Hankins (junior equitation star and now judge), Jack Trainer (winner of numerous National Horse of the Year Awards, Master of Foxhounds and lifelong horseman), Debbie Shaffner (former member of the US Equestrian Team),  Major Jeremy Beale (former Olympic rider for Great Britain and USDF gold medalist) and Ben Guanciale (winner of numerous Zone and National year-end awards).

Currently serving on the board of directors of the Northern California Hunter Jumper Association, Beverly has her "r" judges license.  "The USEF Learner Judges program was as rigorous, challenging and educational as college," says Beverly.  "There is nothing I love more than helping my clients attain their goals.  I know that judging will provide me a whole new perspective that will ultimately make me a better teacher, benefiting my riders and their horses."  Beverly plans to obtain her "R" judges license within the next few years.

Beverly also offers one and two-day clinics at students' facilities. Beverly's clinics are geared to address the level and needs of the riders. With beginners, she returns to the core of her program - excellence through the application and practice of the classic basics. With advanced riders, Beverly works on polishing the subtlies that transform another competitor into a winner.

Married since 1983, Beverly and her husband reside in Marin County.  They are the parents of three daughters, each of whom has successfully competed on the "A" show circuit.

Katharina Coleman, Assistant

Katharina Coleman has been riding all her life.  After her junior years were over, she started her own business training ponies and selling them.  She now works as an assistant trainer for Beverly Jovais at Chestnut Hill.  Prior to turning professional, Katharina won many championships in the hunters and equitation divisions, including the NorCal Pony Finals, Carousel Pony Finals, Almaden Pony Finals (twice), Almaden Junior Finals, AHSA and Zone 10 Pony of the Year End Awards.

Katharina is currently showing Kat Taylor's Kingsford, and Grace McLaughlin's Olympic and Bridget Twomey's Thoughtful in the Pre-Green Hunter division.

Katy Hull

Active in Northern California as a junior rider, Katy began her professional career in upstate New York. She joined one of California's most successful hunter-equitation operations in 1999, first providing training support for a family of private clients in Alaska, and later at the barn's two Northern California facilities. At Chestnut Hill, Katy's natural talent is put to work at home riding, where her ability to develop each horse's unique strengths make them more ridable, and ultimately better able to perform. She is also a gifted instructor who derives great joy from seeing her students improve. When not in the show ring herself, Katy has great success preparing clients and their horses to bring home the ribbons.

Sarah Trask

Sarah Trask, a Bay Area native, joined Chestnut Hill in 2007 as an assistant trainer. During her years as a junior rider, Sarah competed in the hunter and equitation rings, and was a working student at Millennium Farm in Portola Valley. She gained valuable mileage as a catch-rider for horses at Millennium and other area barns. At 18, she attended University of California at Santa Cruz, where she earned a degree in Environmental Studies. During her college years, she taught lessons to riders of all ages at Millennium Farms on the weekends. Sarah took a year off from college to ride and train for Justin Imperato of the horse sales and breeding operation, Premier Show Jumping in Sacramento. Prior to joining Chestnut Hill, Sarah worked as an assistant trainer for Cathy Mendez at Maple Leaf Farm.
